Pupils of Standard Bearers School Lekki Lagos recently
displayed their musical skills at the school’s annual musical recital. The idea
of an annual musical recital at Standard Bearers School came about a few years
back and it has become a veritable platform for showcasing musical talents.
Also it serves as an avenue where the
children are given the opportunity to share with families and friends their
remarkable musical skills. All this were recreated at the 2015 musical recital
of the School which held at their proposed new site in the Lekki 1 area of
Lagos as various works from classical 21st century, and contemporary periods
were performed from pupils selected from Grade 1 to Grade 6 who were grouped
into three performing groups such as the Junior Choir, Senior Choir and
Orchestra. The recital typically for the grade 3 – 6 students, had a thrilling
addition as a little grade 2 child rendered ‘Bob Marley’s – Three Little Birds’
to the delight of the audience.
For most parents and invited guests, this was the first time they were visiting
the new school site and this added more to the event as it showed what more was
in store as a school to exhibit the potentials
of their wards.
The programme kicked off at 5.30pm with the head boy and
head girl, giving the opening speech that welcomed everyone to the event. First
on the list was the rendition by the senior choir, they rendered popular songs
for both the young and old, then the junior choir, who sang the popular ‘We Are
One - Lion King’. Some of the highlights of the day included the rendition of
indigenous songs that had the children looking colourful in their different
native attires. The set of grade 5 hornsmen would probably have given any
professional saxophonist a run for his money and a highlight of the recital may
have been was Miss Lase Subair who rendered Asa’s hit song ‘Bibanke’ backed by
5 singers and this sure got the audience cheering.
At the close of the recital, commendations were given, pictures were taken and
everyone left in high spirits, proud of the brothers and sister or children who
performed at the event. Those whose children were not part of the performance
this year look forward to ensuring their children join the school orchestra and
choir and perform next year. The looks of delight and glowing comments of the
parents further attested to the work the management and teachers of the school
are doing in moulding and preparing the children for the future, encouraging
them to do their best and believing that such confidence and boldness will work
for them in future not only in music but other co-curricular activities to make
them complete individuals and forces to be reckoned with in society.
